The Roadhouse

We just changed our clocks back to standard time last weekend.  A growing number of scientists and other experts are urging the U.S. to not change the clocks again and to abolish daylight saving time for good. Erik Herzog is a chronobiologist at Washington University in St. Louis and he joined Dave to talk about the research that backs staying with standard time all year.

We’ve all seen the many ‘green’ products available on the market today—from tote bags to reusable straws to clothing made of recycled plastic bottles. Do they really make a difference, or at some level are they just an excuse to buy more stuff? Stephanie Parker, a freelance environmental writer, just wrote a piece about this for Ensia, the media outlet of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota.  Stephanie joined Dave on The Roadhouse to tell us more.

Michael & Jennifer McLain & the Banjocats were a part of the North Shore Music Association's Bluegrass Masters Weekend this past weekend.  They took some time from jamming in Lutsen to stop by the WTIP studios.  The group chatted with Dave and Julie about their travels around the country playing music, and of course, played a few songs for us as well.

On a special Fearless Radio membership drive edition of The Roadhouse, we thought it would be fun to have guests in to talk about scary and frightening things.

Up first, Julie spoke Professor Francis McAndrew, professor of psychology at Knox College in Illinois, about coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns.  

Later in the program, Brian was joined by Brad Blair.  Brad is one of the founders of the Upper Peninsula Paranormal Research Society in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Rootz Within is an "Island jam reggae fusion" band from Detroit Lakes.  While in Grand Marais for a couple of nights playing at the Gunflint Tavern the group joined Brian and Dave on The Roadhouse.   You can learn more about Rootz Within on their Facebook page.

Have you ever had the experience of talking about a product or place, then suddenly there are ads for it on your Facebook feed or in your email? You’re probably not being paranoid in thinking your phone could be listening to you because it might be. Professor Ragib Hasan, associate professor of computer science at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, joined Brian on the Roadhouse to tell us more. 

A project called “Shine On” at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking to create a blood test to detect a certain kind of canine cancer that can affect any dog of any breed or age. Dr. Jaime Modiano, lead researcher on the project, joins The Roadhouse to tell us more about the project.

Easy Riders are a group from Peoria, Illinois playing rock and blues.  They were in Grand Marais for a few gigs over the weekend, including stopping by the WTIP studios to join Dave and Brian on The Roadhouse.  Easy Riders performed a few songs, including a one a tribute to the late Robert Hunter.

Garrett Conover, a well-known wilderness guide, author and photographer, has a new book just out: “Sauna Magic”.

He’s coming to Grand Marais on Monday, October 14 and will be at North House Folk School from noon to 1 pm.

Garrett also joined Dave on The Roadhouse to talk all things saunas.
