Podcasts are becoming more and more popular.  In fact, WTIP produces multiple podcasts, including the WTIP Boundary Waters Podcast, and our newest podcast, Sled Dogs, Cold Toes, and a Gal From Texas. 

Still, many wonder what even is a podcast? How can I listen to a podcast?  Ann spoke with Matthew Baxley, cohost of the WTIP Boundary Waters Podcast, to answer those questions and more.

Here’s an idea that might make you feel relieved …January might not be the best time for new year’s resolutions if you want them to stick. Professor Timothy Bono, assistant dean for assessment in Student Affairs and lecturer in Psychological & Brain Sciences in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, joined Brian to tell us what the research shows about New Year's resolutions.

Jim McGowan, a Roadhouse favorite, stopped by the studios to chat with Julie and Dave about holiday traditions, and of course, play a mix of holiday and other tunes.

Craig Baumann is a blues player based out of Wisconsin.  Craig recently went on a weeklong tour that saw him travel from Madison to Grand Marais to Fargo and back, with more stops in between.  While he was in Grand Marais, Craig stopped by The Roadhouse to play a few songs and chat with Julie and Dave about his musical influences and owning a music store in Waukesha, Wisc.

Cook County resident Will Surbaugh just finished spending part of a ‘gap year’ between high school and college taking an 89-day course with the National Outdoor Leadership School out west. Will joined Dave in the studio to tell us more.

Cook County is home to one of the darkest skies in the nation, and adventurers, artists, and photographers from around the world travel here to experience them. This past weekend marked the second annual Dark Sky Festival, and two of the organizers, photographer Travis Novitsky and educator Joel Halvorson, joined Brian to talk about the festival and all things dark skies. 

Commander Jane Allen of the Royal Naval Reserves in Britain recently finished a solo walk around the entire coastline of Britain, approximately 5,500 miles. The goal of the walk was to raise funds and awareness for two Naval charities, the Women's Royal Naval Service Benevolent Trust and the The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.  Ann spoke with Jane to find out more. Heatbox is the alter ego of Aaron Heaton, a Minneapolis-based vocal performer who blends vocal percussion and vocal turntablism with the simulation of horns, strings, musical instruments, and various sonic anomalies. 

Heatbox was recently in the area performing with Maxophone at the SnowBall Music and Ski Festival in Lutsen.  The pair joined Ann and Dave on The Roadhouse to play a few songs and talk about their unique instruments and music.

The Large Lakes Observatory at UMD is just out with a study detailing the many ways the world’s largest lakes benefit people. Since we live on one, we wanted to learn more. Dave spoke with Bob Sterner, director of the Large Lakes Observatory, to learn more about the new study.

Lutsen Mountains had a film screening of the Matchstick Productions ski film, "Return to Send'er" this past weekend.  Beau Larson and Emily Tidwell joined Dave on The Roadhouse to tell us more about the film, and how growing up skiing with the Lutsen team has prepared them for what they do now.

Beau grew up on the slopes of Lutsen Mountains and now works for Matchstick Productions out of Crested Butte, Colorado and served on the team that produced this movie. Emily is also a Cook County graduate.  She now is under contract to shoot photos for some of Lake Tahoe's largest ski areas.  Some of her work was also featured during the film screening this past weekend.
