Physical and mental health impacts of poor air quality

As the Greenwood Fire and other fires continue, there may be health impacts (such as smog) that will impact local residents and nearby communities. Dr. Laalitha Surapaneni , an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, joined Brian to talk about the impacts of poor air quality as well as the intersection of climate change and health.

"Sensational: the Hidden History of America's 'Girl Stunt Reporters'", is a new book that focuses on women journalists who put themselves undercover in dangerous situations to expose societal ills in the 1880s and 1890s. The author of the book, Kim Todd, joined Ann to tell us more.

A Minnesota perspective on the recent UN climate report

The UN climate report that was recently released is pretty bleak, basically stating we’re running out of time to avert major climate disaster. Prof. Heidi Roop of the department of soil, water, and climate at the University of Minnesota joined Julie to explain the report's findings.

Carbon pricing explained

As we deal with wildfires and drought likely brought on or intensified by climate change, we wanted to know more about the strategy of carbon pricing as a way to combat climate change. Dr. Stephen Polasky, professor of Ecological/Environmental Economics at the University of Minnesota, joined Brian to tell us more about carbon pricing.

The View from Split Rock: A Lighthouse Keeper's Life

Lee Radzak served for 36 years as the resident site manager at the Minnesota Historical Society's Split Rock Lighthouse before retiring in 2019.

Lee is now out with a book, "The View from Split Rock: A Lighthouse Keeper's Life," all about the everyday experiences and seasonal round of the life of a lighthouse keeper at Split Rock.  He joined Brian to tell us more about the book, and the process of writing it.

Cryptocurrencies - what are they and what are they for?

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are in the news again, and we’re still wondering exactly what they are and how they work.  To make this more understandable, Dave spoke with Professor Vivian Fang, associate professor of accounting at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

How wildfire and smoke affect our mental health

With this summer’s severe drought, fire danger, and the frequent haze and smoke from nearby wildfires, we were intrigued to learn that someone has been looking into the mental health impacts of it all. Dr. David Eisenman, professor of medicine and public health, and director of the UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters, in Los Angeles, joined Dave to tell us about his research into just that.

For the Love of Cod - what makes Norwegians so happy?

Norway and other Scandinavian countries often rank the highest in happiness surveys, but why is that?  Author Eric Dregni attempts to answer that question with the comic travelogue "For the Love of Cod."  Brian was joined by Eric to learn more about the book.
