Printmaking Intensive: Seeing Possibilities
This opportunity is for painters and printmakers who want to reflect and explore new possibilities and directions while having fun in a community setting. The format will include demonstrations, group and individual discussions, and dedicated work time. Students will focus on monotypes—a “painterly” printmaking process – and relief printmaking using linoleum blocks. 
This class is offered through a partnership between the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the Grand Marais Art Colony (387-2737).
 

During the month of May, the DNR holds a Youth ATV Safety Training Course for students from the ages of 12-15. One of the instructors of the course, Chuck Silence, talks about the importance of ATV safety in this interview.

On May 17, the fourth annual "Gala for the Grove" will take place at Surfside in Tofte. The auction held at the gala is a fundraiser for Birch Grove Community School. North Shore Morning host Julie Carlson talked with Diane Blanchette, the director of the school about the event, the food, and the wonderful cause that it supports.

GreenStep Cities is a voluntary challenge, assistance, and recognition program to help Minnesota cities achieve  sustainability and quality-of-life goals.  Northshore Morning host Matthew Brown learns more in this interview with George Wilkes, Co-Chair of Minnesota Green Step in Grand Marais.

Everyone is invited to a Green Step Cities meeting Monday April 28^th at 7pm at the Cook County Community Center.  

CCLEP and the Grand Marais City Council will present this program to the community and receive feedback about plans that should be pursued in regards to sustainable savings and hear about great things Grand Marais is already doing in planning for a more sustainable 21st century.  Participants can informally vote and discuss these issues.

If you're up late working on your taxes, there's an oppotunity to view a total lunar eclipse.

No special equipment is required.  Night owls can watch the full moon fade away and then turn red.  The main event is between 1 and 4:30am Tuesday April 15^th.  WTIP’s Audrey Summers spoke with Sally Brummel of the Bell Museum of Natural History to learn more.  

Timing for the best viewing of the April 14-15, 2014 total lunar eclipse (all are CDT):
Start of easiest eclipse viewing: 12:58 a.m.
Start of total eclipse: 2:07 a.m.
Mid-eclipse: 2:46 a.m.
End of total eclipse: 3:35 a.m.
End of easiest eclipse viewing: 4:34 a.m.
  
During a total lunar eclipse our moon passes directly into Earth’s shadow, and viewers can see the Earth’s curved shadow pass over the moon. Near mid-eclipse, the moon often turns shades of red from sunlight refracting through the Earth’s atmosphere and reflecting off our moon.

Clara Waddell is a Lutsen native and winner of a University playwriting contest.  The live reading of ‘Rooted Hearts’ will be April 24^th in Minneapolis.  North Shore Morning host Jana Berka finds out more in this interview.
 
Clara is a 2007 graduate of Cook County High School and currently a senior at Metropolitan State University in the Twin Cities.  She is majoring in Screenwriting and English, with a minor in Creative Writing. She will be graduate in December of 2014.
 
The live reading of the play will be held at the Whitney Fine Arts Center (stage door theater), in Minneapolis, on April 24th at 6pm. The three winning plays will be read by a professional cast, and there will be an open discussion with the playwright, director and cast following each play. 

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.  Kind words and praise for both children and adults can play a role in prevention.

Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church hosts an annual spring show focusing on the overlap between creativity and spirituality.  This year’s show, ‘Mapping Mystery’ opens  Friday March 28^th at the Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais.  North Shore Morning host Joe Detrick finds out more in this interview with Reverend Mary Ellen Ashcroft.

The opening reception, Friday March 28th at 5pm, includes a presentation entitled "Frontiers and Borderlands: Navigating the Creative Process," by Ruth Pszwaro.
