-Ebooks Minnesota is a free online book collection available to all Minnesotans within the state. In its third year, more and more folks are using this easy way to access thousands of titles. Valerie Horton director of the University of Minnesota's Minitex program joined The Roadhouse to tell us more about this program.
Breanne Marie & The Front Porch Sinners make Roadhouse debut
-Breanne Marie & The Front Porch Sinners recently made their first trip to Grand Marais to play a gig at the Wunderbar. But, before they played there, they stopped by The Roadhouse to play some of their original tunes, as well as some classic country covers. More information about the band can be found here.
Graphene - A new super material
-Graphene is a sheet of carbon atoms that is light, flexible, stronger than steel and a better conductor of electricity than copper. It's still in the development stages, but getting used in many products and processes already. Even though its inventors won the Nobel prize for it in 2012, it's practically unknown to the general public. Joseph Meany co-authored the book, "Graphene: The Superstrong, Superthin, and Superversatile Material That Will Revolutionize the World," and he stopped by The Roadhouse to tell us all about graphene.
Transgender activist Ellie Krug on The Roadhouse
-Nationally-recognized trans activist Ellie Krug spoke at the Grand Marais Public Library June 23 as a part of the second annual Grand Marais Gay Pride celebration. Before that presentation titled, "Living as Other in America: How to Bridge our Divides," Ellie joined The Roadhouse to talk about her experience transitioning from male to female in 2009, and share ideas on how everyone can be more inclusive.
Poet Bart Sutter talks about and reads from his new book
-Bart Sutter is an award-winning author and a past Poet Laureate of Duluth. He recently published a new book titled, " Nordic Accordion: Poems in a Scandinavian Mood". He stopped by The Roadhouse and spoke with Jay about his new release, and read a few poems as well.
sPARKit! comes to Cook County
-sPARKit! is a project sponsored by Springboard for the Arts in the Twin Cities. The “sPARKit” mobile trailer invites the public to come, play games, and engage in conversation and will be at various sites in Cook
County the week of June 18-22, courtesy of the Grand Marais Public Library. Soozin Hirschmugl is the creative force behind sPARKit, and she called into The Roadhouse to speak with Dave about sPARKit.
Newly formed group WunderDogs on The Roadhouse
-Newly formed group WunderDogs stopped by The Roadhouse to play a few songs and talk with hosts Dave and Brian about how the group came to be. The WunderDogs are Thomas Stamps (Drums), John Mianowski (Bass), and Pete Kavanaugh (guitar).
Larry Weber talks his latest book and love of spiders
-Larry Weber is a naturalist, author, and award-winning teacher. You may know him as a regular guest on WTIP's North Shore Weekend. Larry recently joined The Roadhouse to talk about his latest book, "Web Watching: A Guide to Webs and the Spiders That Make Them."
A conversation with renowned naturalist Bernd Heinrich
-Leading naturalist and author Bernd Heinrich was the featured speaker at North House Folk School during their 2018 Northern Landscapes festival, and while in Grand Marais, he stopped by The Roadhouse. He’s written 21 books, is an expert on ravens among other things and is a world-class runner to boot.
Jon Kallberg performs on three different guitars
-Lutsen guitarist Jon Kallberg joined The Roadhouse again, this time with three unique guitars. Jon performs some covers and original songs on each guitar, as well as talks about the history of them.
