Community Conversations
- 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday 7-8pm
On the first Thursday of every month from 7-8 p.m. WTIP hosts a live interactive conversation on an issue of community importance. Guests are invited into the studio and listeners are invited to call in or email with questions, comments, and concerns. This participatory program is designed to give everyone a voice in the discussion of public affairs issues that shape our community. On Wednesday, December 16 at 5 p.m. There will be a public hearing for review and comment on the updated plan. It was almost two decades ago, when Cook County last updated its Comprehensive Land Use Plan. The land use committee has finalized a new and revised version and we have a panel to discuss it on First Thursday.

- Cook County Schools ISD166 will be coming to the voters on November 3rd with an Operating Levy referendum. Join WTIP’s Jay Andersen for a Community Conversation call-in broadcast.

-Each year dozens of non-profit organizations, agencies and services approach the Cook County Board of Commissioners for funding not mandated by any government, but none-the-less important to our overall quality of life.

For many years these requests have been addressed on an individual basis. In an attempt to reduce the subjectivity of discretionary funding decisions, commissioners are in the process of considering new ways of leveling the playing field.

Recently research has found that a large percentage of infants born along the North Shore have elevated levels of mercury in their systems.
The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Grand Portage Health Service in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Health are presently conducting a project named FISH: that’s an acronym for Fish are Important for Superior Health.

A reinvigorated environment for business and local government is characterized by an almost completely new city government and a focused county-wide chamber of commerce.
Join WTIP’s Jay Andersen for two informative interviews centered on business development and the business of government.
Jim Boyd is the Executive Director of the Cook County Chamber of Commerce and he’ll update us on the Chamber’s legislative priorities and the time he’s spent at the Capitol this session. Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux is the newly elected Mayor of Grand Marais. He and fellow city counselors spent a day beginning an on-going planning process for the city’s future.

This weekend the Cook County Care Center will celebrate 50 years in the community. There are plans for an open house Sunday, and several other celebrations and activities up to and including Fisherman’s Picnic.
