This is the time when organizations, governments and agencies review the year past and look to the year ahead. What did we do right and what could we have done better? What challenges and opportunities wait for us in the coming year?

On Wednesday, December 16 at 5 p.m. There will be a public hearing for review and comment on the updated plan. It was almost two decades ago, when Cook County last updated its Comprehensive Land Use Plan. The land use committee has finalized a new and revised version and we have a panel to discuss it on First Thursday.

Each year dozens of non-profit organizations, agencies and services approach the Cook County Board of Commissioners for funding not mandated by any government, but none-the-less important to our overall quality of life.

For many years these requests have been addressed on an individual basis. In an attempt to reduce the subjectivity of discretionary funding decisions, commissioners are in the process of considering new ways of leveling the playing field.

A reinvigorated environment for business and local government is characterized by an almost completely new city government and a focused county-wide chamber of commerce.

Jim Boyd is the Executive Director of the Cook County Chamber of Commerce and he’ll update us on the Chamber’s legislative priorities and the time he’s spent at the Capitol this session. Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux is the newly elected Mayor of Grand Marais. He and fellow city counselors spent a day beginning an on-going planning process for the city’s future.

This weekend the Cook County Care Center will celebrate 50 years in the community. There are plans for an open house Sunday, and several other celebrations and activities up to and including Fisherman’s Picnic.
