Community Conversations
- 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday 7-8pm
On the first Thursday of every month from 7-8 p.m. WTIP hosts a live interactive conversation on an issue of community importance. Guests are invited into the studio and listeners are invited to call in or email with questions, comments, and concerns. This participatory program is designed to give everyone a voice in the discussion of public affairs issues that shape our community. The ballot question reads, Recognition of Marriage Solely Between One Man and One Woman. Yes or No. If the measure passes, the language added to the state Constitution will read: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.”
The Minnesota Marriage Constitutional Amendment was the topic of the latest WTIP Forum. Jay Andersen and a panel of guests on Oct. 25 held an informative discussion of this controversial and timely issue.
The guests included ministers Dale McIntire and EvaLyn Carlson and attorneys Leigh Mathison and Elizabeth Pierce.

Beryl Singleton Bissell left the monastery to marry a former priest. Soon tragedies followed one after the other and those ensuing years eventually became part of “The Scent of God” – a memoir about love and loss…and hope.

It's high summer on the North Shore, and there's plenty going on in our woods and waters. In 1985 Lloyd K. Johnson sold 178 acres of the land adjoining High and Middle Falls on the Pigeon River to the state and donated an additional 129 acres. Finally, in the fall of 1994, Grand Portage State Park was open for business.

Years ago he moved to Cook County to build birch bark canoes. He stayed to build one of the most vibrant and important non-profit organizations in Minnesota – North House Folk School.

Revised ISD166 School Calendar is WTIP’s First Thursday topic

The ISD166 school board has voted to try a different calendar for the 2012-13 school year. Cook County Schools – and consequently students at Great Expectations – will experience longer days, a number of four-day weeks and some combined additional vacation times.
The administration says the move saves money and improves instruction. If you have kids in school, what do you think?

In response to the dramatic rise in local courthouse violence across the nation, Minnesota’s U.S. Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar have introduced the Local Courthouse Safety Act. The legislation is a reaction to a shooting in December at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais during which a prosecutor and witness were wounded.
