Community Conversations
- 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday 7-8pm
On the first Thursday of every month from 7-8 p.m. WTIP hosts a live interactive conversation on an issue of community importance. Guests are invited into the studio and listeners are invited to call in or email with questions, comments, and concerns. This participatory program is designed to give everyone a voice in the discussion of public affairs issues that shape our community. The last week end in April saw many dozens of responders in Grand Marais for the 24th annual county Emergency Services Conference. The conference brought together firefighters, EMTs law enforcement, first responders and the general public…all for training and greater awareness of community preparedness.

This past April has seen its share of disasters, accidents, explosions, terrorism -- and it has not been confined just to large cities. Six participants in this year’s Emergency Services Conference will discuss their roles in training, advising, planning and preparing for any emergency in Cook County.

For the first eleven years of this century Cook County’s economy grew at less than the rate of inflation. Still the economy is turning the corner nationally and there is a renewed vitality here optimistic about the future.

There are approximately 65 million family caregivers in the United States. They spend an average of 20 hours a week taking care of loved ones. But many of them care for a family member with chronic care needs 24-7.
Join Jay Andersen for WTIP’s First Thursday Community Conversation, “Growing Older, Growing Ill – Caregiving in Cook County.” Our guests include Kay Grindland and Jeannette Lindgren of Cook County Care Partners, Cindy Conkins from the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging and writer, commentator and caregiver Vicki Biggs Anderson.
They gave valuable information on the assets, opportunities and cautions of caring for an older family member, one who is ill or near the end of life.
