First Thursday looks at county discretionary funding

Each year dozens of non-profit organizations, agencies and services approach the Cook County Board of Commissioners for funding not mandated by any government, but none-the-less important to our overall quality of life.

For many years these requests have been addressed on an individual basis. In an attempt to reduce the subjectivity of discretionary funding decisions, commissioners are in the process of considering new ways of leveling the playing field.
