The Roadhouse is a volunteer-produced music show with a special focus on the weekend, featuring local event and music announcements and a fun music mix. Hosted by a rotating cast of volunteers including Tracy Benson, Julie Carlson, Brian Neil and Dave TerSteeg.

Project Bike tour coming to Grand Marais

Project Bike is a Minnesota-wide bicycle tour with visual artists and their studios setting the destinations. For the past four years,
creative leader Dana Sikkila has set out on an art/bike tour, advocating for the idea that every artist has skills and creative ideas to help grow and sustain our communities. This year, her destination is Grand Marais, and she’ll be here in mid-July. Dana joined The Roadhouse by phone and chatted with Dave about the project.

New foods coming to the State Fair

It’s a Roadhouse tradition to find out about all the new foods the Minnesota State Fair offers each summer.  Julie chats with Nikki Hines from the Fair to find out what we can expect this year.  A full list of the new foods is available here.

Wooden Boat Show at North House by Annela Rova

Wooden Boat Show featured speaker Douglas Brooks talks Japanese boatbuilding

This weekend is North House Folk School’s wooden boat show, and the weekend's featured speaker, writer and researcher Douglas Brooks, joined Brian on The Roadhouse to chat about his experiences as an apprentice boat builder in Japan.

Voyage of Discovery gives youth a camping experience

Minnesota Sea Grant, National Park Service, and Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa are offering three two-day overnight camp experiences for new and beginning campers.  Each trip begins and ends at Grand Portage National Monument and includes a day trip aboard the Sea Hunter III to the Windigo Visitors Center on Isle Royale National Park.

The deadline to register for these camp experiences is Monday, June 17.  More information and registration is available on the Minnesota Sea Grant website under news and events.

Brandon Seitz, biological science technician with the National Park Service, joined Dave on The Roadhouse to tell us more about this opportunity.

Paper Parlor kicks off their Summer Tour on The Roadhouse

Paper Parlor is a five-piece group that blends many genres into upbeat tunes. The band is Zach Shears (auxiliary percussion), Chad Hoffland (lead percussion), Wilson Johnson (bass), Kirdan Wenger (vocals/guitar), and  Allison Payonk (saxophone).  They stopped by The Roadhouse just before a gig at the Wunderbar to play some tunes for us.

Accomplished outdoors writer Cliff Jacobson was recently in the area at the BWCA Expo this past weekend.  He also joined Brian on The Roadhouse to talk about his latest book, "Justin Cody's Race to Survival!" and much more.

We recently learned about a company in Two Harbors, Ruth’s Vegetarian Gourmet, that produces gourmet vegetarian and vegan frozen foods—and wanted to learn more.  Tina Van Aernum, PR and marketing director for the company, joined The Roadhouse to tell us more.

Ginstrings return for another Roadhouse performance

Ginstrings are an acoustic progressive string band with roots in Bluegrass, Folk, and Americana, and are frequent visitors of the North Shore music scene.  They joined the Roadhouse while in town for a recent gig to play some tunes from their upcoming album.

Local resident Bob Carter shares strategies to quit smoking

May 31 is World No Tobacco Day, an annual awareness day sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) since
1987. It encourages a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe.  

Bob Carter, a former smoker who has also taught others about quitting, joined The Roadhouse to talk about quitting tobacco.
