County receives state health related grant
-The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has awarded 39 grants to state communities to help lower the number of Minnesotans who use tobacco or who are obese or overweight. Cook County is one of the recipients under the Statewide Health Improvement Program, or SHIP.
Discussion of proposed septic ordinance on WTIP

County holds budget hearing
-The Cook County Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed 2010 county budget at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the Commissioners Room. The board will likely adopt the budget at their Dec. 22 meeting.
County board creates new entity to run fiber optic network
-The county board continues to pursue a county-wide fiber optic network, or broadband, and adopted an ordinance on Tuesday Dec. 1 to create a management structure for the network.
Cook County Schools launch Survey
-Cook County Schools ISD166 is asking for community input through a Stake Holder Survey. According to Superintendent Beth Schwarz, all residents are stake holders in the education of county students.
State reps react to Obama’s war plan
-Eighth District Congressman Rep. Jim Oberstar and Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken weighed in with reactions to President Barak Obama’s Afghanistan speech, Tuesday night.
Forest Service unveils new OHV plan
-Superior National Forest managers have announced a new decision regarding off-highway vehicle (OHV) use in the forest. Off-highway vehicles include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-highway motorcycles, and four-wheel drive vehicles.
County adopts sales tax ordinance
-Voters approved a 1 percent local option sales tax in November, requiring commissioners to adopt an ordinance making the tax a reality.
Outdoor education effort at local school draws national attention
-The kids at Sawtooth Elementary have been included in a recent issue of the Healthy Schools Program Success Stories Newsletter. The story is titled “Being Active Outside Despite the Cold” and chronicles an outing last spring, when Sawtooth Elementary students made the most of the coldest days of winter on snowshoes.
