Death in Carlton prompts safety warnings

The week of Jan. 10 – 16 is Snowmobile Safety Week, and a snowmobile death in Carlton County Saturday prompts several reminders about sled safety from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Road project causes a stir

A recent road improvement project on the Gunflint Trail has altered the look of a famous local landmark.


 

Trout stocking policy will be changed in Cook County

-

In an attempt to cut costs, the Minnesota Department of Natural resources will change its policy of stocking rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout in inland trout lakes across Northeastern Minnesota. According to Tim Goeman, DNR regional fisheries supervisor at Grand Rapids, the savings could total about $40,000 to $50,000 per year.


 

County board keeps Sobanja as chair

In a special meeting Tuesday, Cook County Commissioners re-elected Commissioner Fritz Sobanja to serve as chair for the coming year.


 

County appoints broadband board

A four member Fiber Optic Network Commission was appointed from a list of applicants at the county board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Appointments include Howard Hedstrom, Paul Harvey, Scott Harrison and Terry Meath. Commissioner Bob Fenwick will be the board’s non-voting member.


 

Septic issue in limbo due to MPCA rule changes

For months Cook County has been reviewing its sewage treatment system ordinance. A study committee has submitted recommendations and one public hearing has been held. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency wanted counties to have revised ordinances in place by early February.
