Outdoor education effort at local school draws national attention
The kids at Sawtooth Elementary have been included in a recent issue of the Healthy Schools Program Success Stories Newsletter. The story is titled “Being Active Outside Despite the Cold” and chronicles an outing last spring, when Sawtooth Elementary students made the most of the coldest days of winter on snowshoes.
The Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation granted the Sawtooth PTA money to purchase snowshoes for the school and teachers have been taking their students outside to introduce them to snowshoeing – and exercise. The snowshoes have even helped to increase parent participation in their children's classroom, providing intergenerational education and interaction.
The article states that ”Parents and children learned about a beneficial form of physical activity that encourages everyone to spend more time outdoors during the long Minnesota winters. Introducing the students, teachers and parents to a life-long exercise they can do during the winter months will benefit the individuals and the whole community for years to come.”
