Northern Gardening covers a variety of gardening topics relevant to our northern climate. The program airs on the second Thursday of each month from 7-8 p.m. and is rebroadcast the following Saturday at 6 a.m. The program is a partnership between the Northwoods Food Project, the Cook County U of MN Extension Office, and WTIP.
The Northwood's Food Project is a non-profit organization who's purpose is to increase Cook County's long term food sustainability and self-reliance by eating and growing locally produced food.

Northern Gardening: Vegetable seeds for northern climates
-February's edition of Northern Gardening is all about "great vegetable seeds for Northern Climates".
Hosts Diane Booth, Joan Farnam, and Melinda Spinler are joined by Zachary Paige, owner of North Circle vegetable seed company.

-Cold winter days are a good time for garden planning...
January's edition of Northern Gardening explores the ‘Cold-Hardy Plant List’ developed by the MN Department of Agriculture - specifically, how they determine what plants are on the list and whether local nurseries play a role in its development.
Hosts Diane Booth and Joan Farnam are joined by Steven Shimek, plant health specialist with the MN Department of Agriculture, and Rene Swadburg of The Blue Moose in Grand Marais.

Northern Gardening: Bee-friendly gardens
-December's Northern Gardening is about "Bee Friendly Gardens for Native Bees". Host Diane Booth is joined by Elaine Evans, U of M Extension educator and bee researcher. Elaine has written a practical guide to raise local bumblebees and will discuss how to encourage native bees to inhabit your garden.
Later in the program, there's a discussion about great gifts for the holidays for that gardener in your life.

Northern Gardening: Agrophenology & fall gardening chores
-The November edition of Northern Gardening was all about fall gardening chores and agrophenology--the study of changes in crop production and the relative performance of different crop species and varieties over time. Hosts Diane Booth and Melinda Spinler welcomed guest David Abazs, Finland farmer and NE Sustainable Development Partnership Executive Director, to talk about using agrophenology to plan your gardening season and what fall projects you can do now to make spring gardening easier.

Northern Gardening: Planting in cool spring weather
-Join hosts Diane Booth and Joan Farnam for June's edition of Northern Gardening. This month's topic is growing fruits and planting in cool spring weather.
Joining Diane and Joan on the program are Sara Williams and Bob Bors, authors of 'Growing Fruit in Northern Gardens'. Sara and Bob call into the program from Canada and the University of Saskatchewan. They have had plenty of experience growing plants in zone 3 and developing hardy fruits for the Canadian prairie.
