Ann Possis spoke July 25 with Dr. Karen Gran, a geology professor at UMD, about North Shore rivers and their history. She explained what can be seen and how that history affects these rivers today. She gave a presentation the next day at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center in Schroeder.

Buck & Dick welcomed Staci Stringer (vocals) & Ryan Cihlar (vocals & ukulele), the duo known as Cherry Dirt, to the studio July 18 for wonderful music.. including some great yodeling. You can learn more about them on Facebook.

Dick welcomed the executive director of the Ernest Oberholtzer Foundation, Beth Waterhouse, to the show July 18.  She told the story of how Ober came to know and love the border wilderness area, and how he fought to protect it. Leslie Quick Pedersen & Dan Quick stopped by The Roadhouse July 18 to talk with Buck about their dad, Birney Quick, an artist and instructor who founded the Grand Marais Art Colony, Minnesota's longest-lived art colony. They share delightful stories about the early days of the art colony, their dad's special way with people and, of course, the famous fish fries. An exhibit of Birney Quick's work, some of which has not been seen by the public before, opens with a reception  Friday, July 25 at 5 p.m. at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery in Grand Marais.

How do you feed a six-person crew on a three-year mission to Mars? Buck spoke July 11 with Dr. Grace Douglas, project scientist on Advanced Food Technology at NASA, about the challenges and considerations in creating and optimizing food for people working and living in extreme environments. 

Buck and Dick welcomed Annie Mack to The Roadhouse July 4. Her music mixes gospel, blues, roots, country and soul to tell rich stories. Her husband Paul O'Sullivan accompanied her on guitar. Annie performed the next evening with her entire band at the ACA in Grand Marais. You can learn more about her music here.

Hedstrom Lumber Company of Grand Marais is celebrating its 100th year in business. Jim Boyd has written a wonderful history of this resilient company and family, "Sawdust in Their Blood," weaving personal stories of the Hedstroms with business and area history. He spoke with Buck July 4 about his experiences and observations researching and writing the book. "Sawdust in Their Blood" is published locally by Northern Wilds Media and can be found at local stores. 

Duluth bluegrass band Tin Can Gin made their Roadhouse debut June 27 with great tunes and the stories behind them. You can learn more about the band and where they're playing here.
