Musical favs Michael Monroe & Claudia Schmidt make year-end appearance in Studio A

Bob & Buck hosted musicians Michael Monroe and Claudia Schmidt Dec. 28, in advance of their Log Cabin Concerts for the holiday weekend. They played and sang together and solo, and made great conversation in between.

Amy Marie Schmidt lives in Hovland with her husband and young daughter. She moved to the North Shore from Iowa about 6 years ago.


 

"The Wrong Omar" makes Roadhouse music debut

Bob & Buck welcomed Minneapolis musician "The Wrong Omar" (Joey Shaheen) to Studio A Dec. 21 for his WTIP/Roadhouse debut. His songs are original, quirky, and fun.

Laura Alice Hogeboom Harriman was a true pioneer; a woman in the wilderness. Hard and exhausting as life was for early settlers in Hovland, Minnesota, Laura thrived.


 

Cool new book for kids and their grownups: "Unbored"

Buck chatted recently with Elizabeth Foy Larsen, co-author of "Unbored: The Essential Field Guide to Serious Fun, " which the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune called “the quintessential guide for today’s tech-savvy and socially engaged kids." Geared to kids ages 8 to 13, it's gotten rave reviews from parents and kids alike for its coverage of fun stuff to think about, make and do, from yarn-bombing to classic pranks to building a remote-controlled water blaster.


 

Anishinaabe Way: Susan Zimmerman

Susan Zimmerman is a Grand Portage band member who spent her early childhood on Hungry Jack Lake.  She is an avid hunter, fisherwoman, and wild ricer who also makes baskets and decorative gourds that are rooted in traditional crafts. Anishinaabe Way series producer Staci Drouillard met with her last fall in Grand Portage, where she was in the final days of her annual moose hunt.


 

Duluth musical duo The Brothers Burn Mountain make Roadhouse debut

Buck & Bob welcomed The Brothers Burn Mountain (Ryan & Jesse Dermody) to Studio A Dec. 14. The Brothers play original Americana and bluegrass, with poetic lyrics, on guitar and drums. They were in town for two performances at the Gun Flint Tavern.

Buck visited recently with award-winning environmental & adventure travel journalist Conor Mihell, on his new book, "The Greatest Lake: Stories from Lake Superior's North Shore." They talked about the Canadian north shore, what it's like to be a wilderness guide, environmental threats to the Big Lake, and much more.
