Behind the Work

How can a mayor of a town simultaneously run a bed and breakfast, as well as participate in umpteen other community events and services? Will Moore sits down with Jay Arrowsmith-Decoux on his many roles in the community and how he spends his work day. 

Bill Clayton is resource manager and archaeologist at the Grand Portage National Monument. In this edition of WTIP's ongoing series "Behind the Work," Bill shares how his work allows him a closer look at the fascinating history of this region.  Produced by Carah Thomas.

Fika Coffee is a small, independent artisanal coffee roasting business in Grand Marais, Minnesota.  Owner Joshua Lindstrom roasts small batches of sustainable coffee beans for local distribution.  In this edition of WTIP's ongoing series, Behind the Work, producer Carah Thomas spends time with Josh at his home-based business near Grand Marais.

 Joan and Bob Burrows work at the Dockside Fish Market in Grand Marais each fall during the herring roe harvest. They clean through roe 7 days a week during the peak of the season and although the work is smelly, they enjoy the job.

Bob Brandt has served as Cook County's Drivers Education instructor for 14 years. In this edition of Behind the Work, WTIP's Kelly Schoenfelder gets behind the wheel with Bob as he shares his philosophies on working with teenagers as they learn to drive.

Krishna Woerheide keeps bees. She calls her bee and honey business Flower Power. But Krishna gets a lot more out of beekeeping than honey. Listen to her take on keeping bees and the lessons learned.

This edition of WTIP's ongoing series Behind the Work features parish nurse Rosemary Lamson.  Lamson is a retired public health nurse, now volunteering her time as a parish nurse.  In this segment, Lamson makes a weekly visit to a senior housing facility and talks about what it is to be a parish nurse.

Brandee Wenzel is a Wilderness Ranger in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. She works hard throughout the year to keep trails open, campsites clear, and communicate the importance of wilderness to area visitors. She finds real meaning in the work she does and says it fills her soul.

This edition of WTIP's ongoing series, Behind the Work features Gladys Dockan, 83.  Dockan is a lifetime resident of Cook County and has been doing hair and giving home permanents for more than half a century.  She did hair at the Care Center in Grand Marais for nearly 20 years, helping residents look and feel better with a cut and a perm.  In this Behind the Work, Gladys gives a home perm to another lifetime Cook County resident, Mildred Johnson, 89.
