Pretzel curds, chicken in the waffle, & beer gelato...just a few of the new foods at this year's Minnesota State Fair

Buck chatted June 27 with Dennis Larson...he's the guy who gets to choose the new foods offered each year at the Minnesota State Fair. With 300-400 applications each year for only a few spots, it's tough competition. Listen and learn about some of the yummy new offerings this summer, and how the selection process works. Cloquet shipwreck hunter searches for first German U-boat sunk by U.S. in WWII

Jerry Eliason is a shipwreck hunter who, most recently, discovered the Henry B. Smith in Lake Superior. Now he's embarking on a new project, to find U-656, the first German U-boat sunk by U.S. forces in World War II. He spoke with Dick June 13 to explain why and how they're conducting the search. Transportation expert discusses Rep. Oberstar's legacy

Rep. Jim Oberstar, who represented the Eighth congressional district in Minnesota for 36 years, died last week at age 79. Lee Munnich, director of the national Center for Excellence in Rural Safety at the Humphrey School of Public Afffairs in Minneapolis, joined Dave TerSteeg May 9 to talk about Mr. Oberstar and his legacy in transportation. There are a few fun personal stories here, as well.


 

All about microhousing, living spaces under 100 square feet, with Mark Hansen

Mark Hansen, one of the founders of North House Folk School, has had a life-long interest in microhousing--homes smaller than 100 square feet.  He joined Buck May 2 to talk about both the philosophy and the practical aspects of tiny house construction and living, as well as lots of other interesting topics, including 'how much is enough?' Mark custom builds  small structures from his workshop in Grand Marais.


 

Folk singer & activist Peter Yarrow visits The Roadhouse

Legendary musician and activist Peter Yarrow joined Buck Apr. 18 for a conversation about his work and music, and the legacy he's working to create. Peter will perform and speak at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais Sat., April 26 at 7:30 p.m.


 

Study finds using treadmill while working can improve productivity...and health

Buck spoke Mar. 21 with Prof. Darla Hamann of the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the U of Texas, Arlington. She's the co-author of a recent study showing that walking while you work may boost your productivity as well as benefit your health.


 

Evidence found for first tremors of the Big Bang

Prof. Clem Pryke is a physics and astronomy professor and experimental cosmologist at the U of MN, and one of the principal investigators on the team that recently discovered evidence of cosmic inflation, proof of the first moments of time after the Big Bang. Prof. Pryke joined Dick Swanson recently to explain what they found and why it's so important.


 

Rich Harwood encourages public innovation to tackle community issues

Deb Benedict spoke with community change expert Rich Harwood March 7. Rich is president and founder of the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, which recently announced a plan to train 5,000 new public innovators by 2016. He talked with about  innovation,  change, and WTIP's role developing community here at home.
