Write-ins announce for some West End township seats
The filing deadline to run for township offices in the towns of Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder is over. When the filing period closed on January 17, there was still a need for candidates for all three townships. Since then a few citizens have announced that they are running for office as write-in candidates.
In Lutsen, there are openings for two supervisor positions – one for a three-year term and one to fulfill an unexpired term of one year, as well as a treasurer.
Incumbent Supervisor Andrew Beavers and Treasurer John Groth both filed and their names will be on the Lutsen ballot.
Since then Christine Ordemann announced that she will be running as a write-in for the one-year supervisor seat.
In Tofte there are also two supervisor seats on the ballot. Craig Horak, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of longtime Tofte Supervisor Paul James, tells WTIP he is running for the three-year supervisor slot.
Tofte has heard from Sam Crowley who is running as a write-in for the one-year supervisor position.
Tofte still needs someone to serve as treasurer.
In Schroeder, two candidates have filed for the one supervisor seat on the ballot. Rick Anderson is challenging incumbent Roger “Bill” McKeever.
No Schroeder citizens are the ballot for the treasurer position, but Karla Mensson has announced that if she won the write-in vote, she would be willing to serve as treasurer.
All Minnesota townships hold their annual meetings and elections on the 2nd Tuesday in March, so voters will head to the polls this year on March 14, 2017. Township officials hope that some citizens will mount write-in campaigns for the vacant seats.
