Veterans Day events throughout the community
There are many activities taking place in the next few days in honor of Veterans Day 2017. WTIP's Rhonda Silence talks to Grand Portage Veterans Services Officer Clarence Everson about the Grand Portage event.

School District 166 is hosting a Veterans Day Concert Friday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the varsity gym. The Cook County Band will be presenting A Tribute to the Armed Forces. There will be music from the Cook County band and choir. All veterans and community members are invited to attend.
At the event, Student Council members are collecting for their Cookies for Troops project. Donated cookies will be boxed and shipped to local service men and women serving overseas. If you know someone from our area who is deployed, please contact Pam Taylor at the school at 387-2273.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 413 will also be at the concert, accepting clothing donations for homeless veterans. A donation box for new or very gently used warm weather clothes will be at Grandma Ray’s throughout the day on Friday.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 413 will serve complimentary chicken dinners to veterans that day from 4 to 6 p.m. at Grandma Ray’s. The meal is free for veterans, but all community members are invited.
The Legion Auxiliary will also be accepting clothing donations for homeless veterans at that time. A donation box for new or very gently used warm weather clothes will be at Grandma Ray’s throughout the day on Friday.

And on Veterans Day, the community of Grand Portage is hosting a ceremony, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with drum song, flag ceremony, a speaker and the traditional moment of silence. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments and a time for visiting.
The ceremony will take place at Grand Portage Legion Post 2009, 8495 East Hwy 61, mile marker 146.

Cook County will be holding a small ceremony on the courthouse lawn at 4 p.m. on Veterans Day. The county will be installing a plaque in remembrance of longtime American Legion Post 413 Commander Don “Smasher” Wilson.

Another dinner will be held at Grandma Ray’s on Veterans Day from 4 to 6 p.m., sponsored by American Legion Post 413. The meal will be a roast beef dinner. All are welcome and the meal will be free to veterans.
Also on Veterans Day, November 11, Gene’s Foods in Grand Marais will be offering complimentary soup and sandwich from their deli to all veterans and their spouses.
