Vandals destroy dozens of mailboxes
Sometime during the night on Friday, July 20, vandals went on a mailbox-smashing spree. Dozens of mailboxes in Grand Marais—along County Road 6, Brandon Lane, County Road 60, Wesley Lane and Devil Track Road—were damaged.
Some mailboxes were only dented, others crushed and many of the mailbox doors were torn off, laying on the ground. Plastic mailboxes were pierced.
The action is more than vandalism. Mailboxes are considered federal property, and federal law makes it a crime to vandalize them (or to injure, deface or destroy any mail deposited in them). Violators could face severe fines and even jail time.
Needless to say, homeowners were distraught to make this discovery this morning. Anyone with information on who could have done this is encouraged to call Cook County Law Enforcement at 218-387-3030.
