During fishing opener, people will see and smell some smoke, possibly as far as five miles away, as the U.S. Forest Service, Superior National Forest conducts three prescribed fire projects this weekend.
In the evening and at night, smoke may settle in low areas and on lakes. The Forest Service anticipates that this will be in the vicinity of the burn unit and not very heavy.
The plan at this time is to begin the prescribed burns on Friday, May 12 with the “Leo project,” 12 miles north of Grand Marais and north of East and West Twin Lakes.
On Saturday, the “Northeast burn” will be conducted 10 miles north of Tofte near The Grade road.
And on Sunday, the “Shack burn” will be along the Wanless Road west of Elixir Lake in Lake County.
