UPDATE: Election filing period ends Aug. 14 for city, school, hospital board
The deadline to file to run for the local school or hospital board or for the Grand Marais city council is today, August 14.
North Shore Health has three seats on the ballot and as of this morning, no one had filed in Hospital Board District 3 or District 5.
The incumbents are Sharon Bloomquist in District 1, Steve Nielsen in District 3 and Randy Wiitala in District 5.
Bloomquist has filed for re-election in District 1 and Wiitala filed in District 5. No citizens filed for District 3.
They serve on that board along with Justin Mueller and Chair Kay Olson.
School District 166 has three seats on the November ballot. Incumbents are Deb White, in District 1, Chris Goettl in District 3 and Dan Shirley, in District 5.
White has filed for re-election in District 1 and Shirley is running again in District 5. Chris Goettl is not running for re-election and two people have filed for that District 3 seat, Rena Rogers and Steven Nielsen.
Other citizens on the school board are Carrie Jensen in District 2 and Board Chair Sissy Lunde in District 4.
The City of Grand Marais has a number of seats on the ballot this year, due to resignation of council members, Dave Mills and Tracy Benson both who moved out of the city and left the council. The city council appointed two citizens to take those spots, Jonathan Steckelberg and Kelly Swearingen.
Both Steckelberg’s and Swearingen’s seats will be on the ballot, and as of this morning, both had filed to run to serve on the council again.
The seats held by Mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux and councilor Anton Moody are also on the ballot and they have both filed to run for re-election.
Citizens interested in running for the School Board or Hospital Board may do so by filing at the Cook County Auditor’s Office. Anyone wishing to run for the Grand Marais City Council can do that at Grand Marais City Hall.
There is a candidate filing fee of $2 for all of these offices.
The filing period runs until 5 p.m. on August 14.
