The Cook County Sheriff's Office has provided more details regarding the body of a deceased man found on a Lake Superior beach on June 27.

The body of a 46-year-old male was found by mile marker 123 near a North Shore river. The deceased’s body was discovered by a woman walking on the beach who reported to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The man’s vehicle was parked near where he was located.

The Sheriff's Office today announced that a preliminary autopsy confirms that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The deceased was from Woodbury, MN. His family has been notified. According to Valerie Marasco, Cook County director of public information, in cases involving mental health issues or suicide, identies will not be released.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this man, as well as our responders,” said Sheriff Pat Eliasen. “Suicide can have devastating, life-long emotional impacts for those left behind and certainly affects our local responders. This was another tragic loss of life that was preventable. We encourage anyone struggling with depression, mental health or other issues to seek help; there is always another answer.”

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at any time at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
