Two county commissioner seats up for election as filing begins May 19

There are two seats up for election this year on the Cook County Board of Commissioners. The seats are for district two and district four, currently held by Myron Bursheim and Heidi Doo-Kirk, respectively.

The filing to run for county board begins Tuesday, May 19.

Due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, the process to file for elected office this year is somewhat different, according to Cook County Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers. The process to file for elected office can be done online, Powers explains in this interview with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs (find the audio below).

Meanwhile, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said this week that he would support the process of having Minnesota’s 2020 elections primarily by mail. This would include both the primaries Aug. 11 and the general election Nov. 3.

The statement from Walz comes after those also in support were dealt a setback from state lawmakers who did not include a plan to expand mail-in voting during the COVID-19 pandemic in recently passed legislation.
