New book of Minnesota know-how, from carving ice sculptures to singing like a voyageur...

Bob was joined by former Pioneer Press outdoors writer (and current communications director for the MN DNR) Chris Niskanen Dec. 7 to talk about his new book, "The Minnesota Book of Skills: Your Guide to Smoking Whitefish, Sauna Etiquette, Tick Extraction and More." Those and dozens of other uniquely Minnesotan skills are covered in this 'playful yet practical' how-to guide.

First-ever food history exhibit at Nat'l. Museum of American History opens

Buck chatted Nov. 23 with Paula Johnson, curator at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., about their brand-new exhibit, "Food: Transforming the American Table 1950-2000," which features Julia Child's kitchen, among other things. The exhibit examines some of the big changes in food and wine in postwar America.


 

Anishinaabe Way: Wendy Quade

Wendy Quade has taught Anishinaabemowin and American History at Cloquet Sr. High School for ten years. In this edition of Anishinaabe Way, Ms. Quade and her students share their hard work in learning how to speak the Ojibwe language.

Ms. Quade also discusses the importance of indigenous language retention and cultural history curriculum in our schools.


 

Award-winning Alaska writer Seth Kantner visits The Roadhouse

Buck welcomed Alaska writer, photographer and commercial fisherman Seth Kantner to Studio A Nov. 16. Seth is the highly-acclaimed author of "Ordinary Wolves" and "Shopping for Porcupine," and was in Grand Marais as the featured speaker at North House Folk School's Winterer's Gathering.


 

Mary R. Morgan on the unique difficulties of losing a twin

Bob visited Nov. 16 with Mary Rockefeller Morgan, author of "Beginning with the End: A Memoir of Twin Loss & Healing." She's a therapist who specializes in working with twinless twins. In this book, she shares her personal story of losing her twin brother at age 23, and how the special bond between twins affects the grieving process.


 

Bill Emerson & Wally Hughes bring amazing bluegrass to Studio A

Legendary banjo player Bill Emerson & fiddle player Wally Hughes stopped by The Roadhouse Nov. 2 to chat and play some foot-tappin' tunes. They were in town with the rest of Bill's band, Sweet Dixie, for the 22nd annual Bluegrass Masters Weekend at Lutsen Resort.


 

Michael Schumacher, author of "Mighty Fitz," on the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Michael Schumacher, author of "Mighty Fitz: The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald," visited with Bob Nov. 2 about writing the book and why this particular shipwreck fascinates so many people. The anniversary of the disaster is Nov. 10.

Welcome back to Magnetic North, a veritable smorgasbord for the birds and beasts of the field. At least the ones who hang out along the ribbon of highway hugging Lake Superior.
