Many anglers come to places near Grand Marais and up the Gunflint Trail with walleye on their minds. Walleye have long been a Minnesota gem, and a fish that becomes the focus of many trips to the Boundary Waters.

However, a reliable species is often there waiting to save many fishing trips in Cook County and the North Shore area: smallmouth bass.
