Richard Painter, a longtime Republican and former ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, announced during a press conference in the Twin Cities on Monday that he's running for U.S. Senate as a Democrat in Minnesota.

Painter has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump. He also is clear on his stance against proposed copper-nickel mines in northeastern Minnesota.

Painter spoke with WTIP’s Jay Andersen about why he is running for U.S. Senate.
