Along the North Shore, it’s known as the “Hovland Hum.”

The Hum, as it’s known universally, is described locally as a low-frequency sound similar to that of a generator running in the distance.

WTIP aired a program in October where a Cook County resident described hearing the mysterious “hum” near Chester Lake a few miles west of the Arrowhead Trail. Since the airing of that program, numerous local residents have described hearing a similar sound throughout the county, with multiple reports coming from the Hovland area.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with two of these individuals, Jim and Michele Miller, about their experiences hearing the “Hovland Hum.”

Friedrichs also spoke with Dr. Elizabeth Silber, a Canadian physicist and planetary scientist who investigated reports of a similar ‘hum’ in Windsor, Canada.
