The Roadhouse

Bob King, creator of the Astro Bob blog in the Duluth News-Tribune, has written a great new book about how to find planets, constellations, satellites, and more, without a telescope. It's called "Night Sky with the Naked Eye." Bob talked with Dave recently about the book, who it's for, and what it teaches. And get set for the Geminid meteor shower, Dec. 13 & 14.

Beatrice Ojakangas is the author of 29 cookbooks and recognized in the James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame. Her new memoir, "Homemade," is about growing up in a big Finnish family in northern Minnesota and moving out into the bigger world to become a very successful food writer. Amy & Dave Freeman spent the last year living in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to call attention to the value of wilderness in the face of proposed mining projects nearby. They chatted with Dick the day before appearing at North House Folk School as the featured speakers at Winterers' Gathering. Learn what they found most challenging, most wonderful, and how they feel about being back in civilization. If you missed their North House presentation, they'll do it again at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts Sunday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, now's a natural time for parents, grandparents and teachers to promote gratitude in kids. Dr. Giacomo Bono, assistant professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills, has been studying gratitude in children. He chatted with Dave about why gratitude is important, how it affects children's development, and simple ways to encourage kids to be thankful.

Great Lakes historian and author Michael Schumacher spoke with Dave recently about his latest book, "Torn in Two, " which recounts the story of the 1966 sinking of the freighter Daniel J. Morrell, and of its only survivor, Dennis Hale. 

Jim Hurst is a master of bluegrass guitar, and an experienced instructor and session musician as well. He was in town for the 26th annual Bluegrass Masters Weekend at Lutsen Resort, put on by the North Shore Music Association. Felicia Schneiderhan is an award-winning author who lives in Duluth. Dave read her memoir, "Newlyweds Afloat: Married Bliss and Mechanical Breakdowns Onboard a Trawler," and had to talk with her.
