New University of Minnesota research shows impact of boat waves on the environment
New data from researchers at the University of Minnesota takes a close look at how various motorized boats and the waves they make are impacting the environment.
A study released this month by researchers at UM illustrates the impact of waves generated by boats used for wakesurfing. Still an uncommon sight in Cook County, boats used for wakesurfing are very popular in other parts of the state, particularly near Brainerd and the Twin Cities.
Lead researcher Jeff Marr, associate director of engineering and facilities at the university's St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, and Bill Herb, another UM researcher, spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about what this research means for Minnesota, Cook County and lakes near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
