Some rural hospitals in Minnesota, including here in Cook County, are no longer providing labor and delivery services.

Minnesota Public Radio has an in-depth report on this topic in a new four-part series airing this week. The series focuses on rural hospitals and their retreat from delivering babies.

MPR Reporter Catharine Richert traveled to Grand Marais and other parts of Cook County to highlight this topic in Minnesota. The series debuted on MPR Jan. 22.

While reporting on this story in late 2018, Richert stopped by WTIP to visit with staff and discuss some of the reporting for the series. In addition, MPR and Richert agreed to share the audio of the series with WTIP. The four-part series will air on Daybreak and the North Shore News Hour during the last week of January.

In addition, WTIP News Director Joe Friedrichs spoke with Richert about the MPR series and her time in Cook County reporting on this story.
