More than half a million ducks light up weather radar in Duluth
More than half a million ducks that went airborne near the Rice Lake Wildlife Refuge in northern Minnesota sent the National Weather Service (NWS) radar into a frenzy of activity Oct. 16.
The incident happened so quickly and unexpectedly that initially meteorologists at the NSW office in Duluth feared a wildfire was burning in Aitkin County. After talking with local law enforcement, it was eventually narrowed down to the wildlife refuge and to a massive cloud of ducks.
WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with Kevin Huyck, a meteorologist with the NWS office in Duluth, about the incident.
