Moose hunt continues in Cook County in 2018

At least 23 bull moose will likely be harvested this year during a moose hunt by Chippewa bands in northeastern Minnesota, according to public documents and officials with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

A total of 18 bull moose can be harvested by members of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. This hunt will begin Saturday, Sept. 22, according to Mike Schrage, a wildlife biologist for the band.

It remains a possibility that the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa will harvest additional moose in northeastern Minnesota this year, including in Cook County. The Grand Portage Band has not made an official announcement this year about a moose hunt on Ceded Territory. The Boise Forte Band announced it would conduct a moose hunt on its reservation this year, with a maximum of five bulls harvested in that hunt.

This year’s hunt by the Chippewa bands follows a similar hunt that took place last fall and in 2016 in 1854 Ceded Territory in northeastern Minnesota. Approximately 75 bull moose have been harvested in these combined hunts during the past two years.

The 2018 aerial moose survey estimate of 3,030 moose in the northeastern part of the state is statistically unchanged from last year’s estimate of 3,710.
