MnDOT delay gives city more time to prepare for road construction

The future of construction for Highway 61 from Cutface Creek through Grand Marais has been up in the air in recent days. Grand Marais Mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux told WTIP that the highway reconstruction work is being pushed back from 2019-2020 to 2020-2021.
The mayor said Minnesota Department of Transportation has taken full responsibility for the delay. He said MnDOT tells the city that there were errors in the survey work completed by MnDOT and a delay in the right-of-way acquisition process, which means bids for the work cannot be let this spring. However, Arrowsmith DeCoux says it is not necessarily a bad thing to have a delay.
