Minnesota award presented to local artist Tom Christiansen

Each year AARP Minnesota presents “50 Over 50” – a list of 50 individuals over the age of 50 from across Minnesota who are making an impact.

Cook County has a citizen on this year’s list – sculptor Tom Christiansen of Lutsen has been named to the Arts & Culture honorees.

Many of WTIP’s listeners know Tom, but for those who do not – Tom and his wife Marcia Hyatt operate Last Chance Fabricating, a gallery and bronze-casting studio in Lutsen.

Tom’s sculptures can be seen in more than a dozen communities in the region, in public settings and in private collections.

In addition to creating and promoting art, Tom is an avid arts supporter. He contributes to the Grand Marais Art Colony and North House Folk School, and hosts Wednesday Night Jazz on WTIP Community Radio.

Tom received the “50 over 50” award Oct. 17 at a ceremony at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs reached out to a number of Christiansen’s associates, family and friends to discuss his work, life and the award.
