Memorial Day tribute honors Cook County veterans
A crowd of approximately 100 people gathered for a Memorial Day ceremony on the lawn of the Cook County Courthouse at 11 a.m. on May 29. American Legion Post 413 conducted the ceremony, with Bob Mattson serving as this year’s master of ceremonies.
Mattson read the names of 31 local veterans who died during the past year. He also encouraged young veterans to remain active and carry the torch of future Memorial Day and other similar events.
Following the service, at about 11:30 a.m., a luncheon was held for veterans, friends and family members at Grandma Ray’s in Grand Marais. The luncheon was hosted by the Legion Auxiliary and there was no charge for veterans at the luncheon.
WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs was on site for the event and shares this audio report below.
