Some North Shore visitors found an unpleasant surprise while walking on the beach of the east bay of Grand Marais on Thursday, May 18 – a dead loon.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources area wildlife manager Dave Ingebrigtsen retrieved the bird. Ingebrigtsen said the reason for the loon’s demise is not immediately apparent. He said there is no sign of trauma. He said birds sometimes starve, but this loon seems to have sufficient fat.
Ingebrigtsen is holding the loon until a necropsy can be conducted. He said it is a very nice specimen and when the necropsy has been completed, the bird will likely go to a museum.
