A look at the law enforcement log, May 6 - 13

Each week the Cook County Sheriff’s Office provides a brief report of calls made to the Cook County Law Enforcement Center in the past week. This week’s report provides details logged by law enforcement dispatchers from May 6 to 13.

On May 11, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources with a party that fled on an all-terrain vehicle on West Highway 61. Floyd Wiele of Lutsen was arrested.

The sheriff’s office was called by a party that had an inert grenade at their house that they wanted to get rid of. A deputy inspected. The grenade had a hole in it. The deputy took possession of the grenade and will dispose of it.

The sheriff’s office was called for a disturbance in Grand Marais on May 9. Deputies found that it was a couple having an argument after drinking. The parties were advised of options.

There was a car crash on West Highway 61 on May 12. Jamison Sphon of New Hope, Minnesota crashed at 1:20 a.m. and was transported to North Shore Health. A tow truck was called for the vehicle.

There was a report of an erratic driver on West Highway 61 on May 12. Sheriff deputies were unable to locate the vehicle.
A sexual assault was reported on May 13. It was referred to the county attorney for review.

On May 11 and 12, there was a string of vandalism calls. There were calls from North Broadway, 4^th Avenue West, 5^th Avenue West, and 3^rd Avenue West. Numerous cars in Grand Marais were scratched with the symbol “5D.” The matter is under investigation.

A suspicious activity call was made reporting an unidentified van driving around the school in Grand Portage on May 7. The van was gone on arrival of the sheriff’s deputy.

There were two animal disturbance calls on May 6, first of a deer in the ditch by the Caribou Trail with broken legs. It was dispatched. A few hours later there was a call reporting a dead deer in that area.

Other animal disturbance calls reported a loose dog on West Highway 61 on May 6 and on County Road 44 on May 9.
On May 9, there was a social media harassment after a dog was allegedly shot by a neighbor.

A party reported a cell phone lost on North Broadway on May 6 and an abandoned bike was found on May 11. A hand-held radio was found on a canoe portage on May 12. An Ontario ID was found on Wisconsin Street on May 12. The owner was contacted.

The sheriff’s office assisted with landlord/tenant issues in Colvill on May 7 and West Highway 61 on May 10. The sheriff’s office answered questions about how to deal with unwanted contact on May 7 and an information request regarding shoplifting laws. Deputies also provided assistance for a salvage company moving a trailer on May 8.

There was also a call reporting a semi truck parking in the wrong area. Law enforcement provided a tow company phone number.

On May 7, there was a call of a garbage bag open on the road on east Highway 61.

The sheriff’s office was called to help a party with a psychological problem in Grand Marais on May 8 and another psychological problem call in Grand Portage on May 11.

A check hazard call was regarded due to snow deposited in the roadway on Anhorn Drive, by the public landing on Greenwood Road in Grand Marais.

The sheriff’s office assisted other agencies such as the probation office.

There was a report of a child protection matter on May 9 as a party reported children not wearing seatbelts in vehicle.

Some smelters reported a light in the sky at 11:49 p.m. on May 10. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and there was nothing on radar in the sky or on the water.

There was a request for information on a vehicle that had been parked on First Avenue in Grand Marais for too long on May 11.
There was a report of illegal camping at the Cutface Creek Wayside in Grand Marais on May 11. It was campers that had stopped overnight.

On May 12, law enforcement received a call of a party in the Boundary Waters Wilderness with a medical issue. It was not life threatening, and the parties were taking the person out of the wilderness themselves. The call was for information only.
Law enforcement dispatchers handled four crank or misdialed phone calls.

There were 13 traffic stops with reprimands and 2 traffic stops with citations issued to motorists. There were 10 medical calls. And, deputies made 10 business and residence checks.
