Local swimmers compete in Lake Superior event

The Lake Superior based Point to La Pointe swim took placed Saturday, July 29. Three Cook County residents, all members of the YMCA Masters Swim Program, participated in the event.

The trio includes Lynne Wiitala, Dave Nonnemacher and Ann Belleman. They each completed the two-mile Lake Superior open-water swim within their goal times for the event. Ann placed 4th in her age group, Lynne 10th.

Swimming to Madeline Island has been a storied feat around the Bayfield, Wisc. area for decades. Starting as a community swim for 24 people in 2006, Point to La Pointe has grown into a thriving community event hosting more than 500 swimmers last year.
