In recent weeks media coverage about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,  including WTIP reporting, focused on Thanksgiving, breaking from traditional family gatherings and limiting social interactions during the holiday season.

A local physician from Sawtooth Mountain Clinic in Grand Marais, Dr. Kurt Farchmin, said during a Nov. 25 interview on WTIP that the recommendations focused on slowing the spread of the virus extend beyond Thanksgiving, including things like holiday shopping, other upcoming holidays, the month of December as a whole and into 2021.

Other topics discussed during the interview, that aired live on WTIP’s Daybreak program, include an update on testing for the new coronavirus in Cook County and the challenging news from Silver Bay this week about the Veterans Home being impacted by COVID-19.

As the pandemic continues and with the full understanding it’s a challenging time in the community, Dr. Farchmin took a few moments to point out what he and other healthcare workers are thankful for in Cook County at this time, one day ahead of Thanksgiving.

“We are in the best situation we could have hoped for at this time,” Farchmin said in a statement sent to WTIP in conjunction with the interview. “We have the fewest people in the state who have gone through COVID-19 and to date no deaths and we are seeing a very real light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines.”
