The longtime superintendent of Isle Royale National Park retired in early November.

Phyllis Green stepped down Nov. 1 as head of the remote park in northwestern Lake Superior. She held the position for 18 years.

The National Park Service is likely to transfer someone from another park to be the next superintendent at Isle Royale. Until a new lead is appointed, longtime park staffer Liz Valencia will be the temporary superintendent at Isle Royale. Valencia has served for many years as the chief of interpretation and cultural resources at Isle Royale.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with Valencia about her time working on the remote island and her thoughts on being the acting superintendent.
