A hit and run on Tuesday, April 25 sent Cook County Law Enforcement on a search for a vehicle missing its passenger side mirror.

A 52-year-old Grand Marais woman was walking west just before 4 p.m. on County Road 7 near Nicole Kristine Lane in Grand Marais when she was struck by a vehicle coming up behind her.

The impact was enough to throw her into the ditch and to dislodge the vehicle’s mirror, which the woman picked up and turned over to Cook County Sheriff deputies.

The woman told deputies that the vehicle, a small silver-gray passenger car slowed, but did not stop. It continued west bound on County Road 7.

The pedestrian suffered abrasions to her hand and had upper leg and arm pain. After being struck, she walked about two miles to her home to call the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies took the mirror to local automotive businesses and it was determined that the part was from a Chevy Impala, most likely from the 2006 -2013 model year.

The Sheriff’s Office contacted the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services to get a list of silver or gray Impalas registered in the county. One such vehicle—with a missing passenger side mirror—was spotted at the Grand Marais SuperAmerica, but it was not the vehicle in question. It was a white car, not gray.

Law Enforcement checked Impalas registered to people in Schroeder, Tofte and Colvill, finally finding the vehicle allegedly involved in the hit and run, a gray 2007 Chevy Impala in Grand Marais.

The vehicle was impounded. Sheriff Pat Eliasen told WTIP the incident remains under investigation.
