Gresczyk will become Grand Marais city councilor
The Grand Marais City Council election was a bit complicated this year. A recount was needed in one race and then earlier this week, WTIP learned that there was the possibility that Carl “Pete” Gresczyk would not take the council seat to which he had been elected.
Gresczyk was concerned about a possible financial conflict of interest. His company, G&G Septic has a contract with the city of Grand Marais to haul sewage sludge to Duluth on a regular basis. He also has a contract with the city for rental of PortaPotties in the city.
After learning about that potential conflict, WTIP reached out to Gresczyk, who declined an interview, but who said when he learned about the financial conflict issue, he decided to decline the council seat. However, he said City Administrator Mike Roth said something could possibly be worked out so he could still serve.
Gresczyk said he was waiting for confirmation from the city’s attorney before accepting the seat. He said he wants to make sure that his business is not in jeopardy before taking the position.
WTIP contacted Gresczyk again on Friday, November 16 and it appears he will be able to take the seat. Gresczyk said he had documentation from the city’s attorney that states he can take the seat, as long as he recuses himself from any of the city’s dealings with his company.
Gresczyk will likely attend his first meeting as a city councilor on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
