Members of Minnesota Native nations gathered at the American Indian Center in Minneapolis on Monday, July 13, to celebrate the announcement that the Washington NFL team would no longer be called their traditional mascot name.

Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, and the first Native American woman elected to statewide office in Minnesota, and only the second nationally, was there to speak about the negative effects of depictions of Native Americans in names, logos and mascots.

Members of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa have been involved with the efforts to see a name change. Grand Portage Tribal Councilman John Morrin serves on the board of the National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media.

In 2014, Morrin spoke with WTIP's Veronica Weadock about taking part in a 2014 protest on this topic. Listen to the interview here.

WTIP's Rhonda Silence spoke with Morrin again this week to hear his thoughts on the Washingon team's decision to finally stop using the name.
