Grand Portage primary election on April 3
The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is holding a primary election on Tuesday, April 3.
The Grand Portage Tribal Council is the governing body of the reservation and is a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The primary is being held in accordance with the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe constitution, which calls for a primary if there are multiple candidates for the same seat.
The Grand Portage Tribal Council consists of a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary/Treasurer, and two Committee members. All positions are four-year terms.
Running in the primary are:
For secretary/treasurer Dennis B. Morrison, the incumbent
April McCormick
Robert “Bobby” Deschampe
Kevin Johnston
For Committee Person I
William “Bill” Meyers
Briand Morrison
And Rob Hull, incumbent
For Committee Person II
John Morrin, incumbent
Mike Keyport
There is no primary for the Committee Person II position, as there are just two candidates. Who takes the seat will be determined in the general election on June 12. Council members take office on July 9.
WTIP reached out to all of the candidates on the primary election ballot and two agreed to interviews. WTIP's Rhonda Silence speaks with candidates April McCormick and Briand Morrison.
