Grand Portage Lodge and Casino will host its inaugural fishing tournament later this month.

The tournament will take place Sept. 24-26. Participants will fish for lake trout and salmon (king and coho) to qualify. Fishing will take place on Lake Superior.

Seth Moore is the director of biology and environmental services for the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Moore was involved in planning the tournament, including specific considerations to allow for a sustained and healthy fishery in the waters where anglers can harvest fish during the event.

Moore spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about the tournament and some of the fisheries and biological considerations that were made in the planning process. Audio below.
