Grand Portage community breaks ground for new playground

The Grand Portage community welcomed some special guests on Tuesday, May 16. Members of the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee visited the Grand Portage Community Center and Oshki Ogimaag School to award a Minnesota Legacy Fund grant to be used to replace playground equipment. 

Among the dignitaries was “Victor,” the Minnesota Vikings mascot, who posed for photos and played peek-a-boo with the littlest attendees while the crowd waited for the groundbreaking of the new playground. 

The groundbreaking event started with drum song by Trevor Deschampe and David Logan of the Stonebridge Singers. Julia Davis, Community Partnerships Manager for the Minnesota Legacy Fund Super Bowl 52 Host Committee, welcomed all and explained that the grant was part of the Minnesota Legacy Fund’s “52 weeks of Giving” campaign, a year-long effort to make the Super Bowl 52, which will be held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in 2018 a statewide event.
  
The community was presented with a larger-than-life check denoting the grant of $100,000 for the new playground.
