Grand Marais Art Colony officially announces building purchase
In May 2019, WTIP Community Radio learned that the Grand Marais Art Colony made a purchase offer for the former North Shore Pharmacy building in Grand Marais. On June 27, a small gathering was held at the vacant pharmacy to announce that the Art Colony had taken possession of the building.
On hand to give a tour of the former pharmacy space were Art Colony Executive Director Lyla Brown, Artistic Director Ruth Pszwaro, Board Member Sally Berg, and Development Manager Kathi Polley.
They explained that the $500,000 development project will begin this summer and expand the nonprofit’s studio and public space by more than 5,000 square feet. The Art Colony will continue its work in the old church building on West 3rd Avenue in Grand Marais.
The expansion will provide space for the Art Colony’s growing programming.
The project, which involves private and public funding, will be carried out in several phases, according to Executive Director Brown.
The former Dog Hus property, attached to the old pharmacy building, will be rented to an independent entity and, contingent on how and when Art Colony programs evolve, eventually converted into a studio space.
Anyone interested in assisting or learning more about this undertaking, may contact Kathi Polley at [email protected].
WTIP’s Rhonda Silence was on hand for the announcement and tour and she provides this report.
