Government shutdown to impact wolf research on Isle Royale

The ongoing government shutdown continues to make headlines across the country as the first full week of January arrives to the North Shore. Among the latest in local connections to the shutdown is the wolf research taking place on Isle Royale following the transfer of wolves from Cook County to the island in 2018.

An unidentified staff member from the research project posted a message Jan. 6 on the ‘Wolves and Moose of Isle Royale’ Facebook page.

“It is our present understanding that the 61st Winter Study of Wolves and Moose in Isle Royale National Park will not be allowed during the partial shutdown of the Federal government,” the message reads.

In related news, in December 2018, WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with Dr. Seth Moore, the director of wildlife and biology for the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, about the transfer of wolves from the Minnesota mainland to the large Lake Superior island.
